| Request for Redress by THA 257 (IRC Race 7) |
Abstract
Recovery of crew overboard from another boat. |
Facts Found
1. IRC 2 started as the second class at 1005, wind speed in excess of 25 knots, rough sea approx 2 meter waves, and rain. 2. 10 minutes after start, THA257 ahead 2 other boats of the same class(Platu), THA 257 saw a boat capsized ahead slightly to port and crew members in the water. 3. THA 257 turned away from racing and went to help the people in the water. 4. Spent approx 10 minutes throwing lifelines and life buoy to rescue them. 5. While in the process of rescuing them THA 257 Jib was torn un-usable, THA 257 had to retire from the race. 6. That race continued until 2 hrs 15 min 52 sec for the last boat to finish. |
Rules
RRS 62.1(c) |
Conclusion
1. THA 257 acted honorably helping people in distress, doing so endangering his racing results. 2. The damage to his Jib resulting to his retirement was not proven as the result of the rescue, or could be due to material fault. 3. His position ahead the 2 other boats might not have continued during the more than 2 hours of racing. 4. THA 257 should be awarded a finishing place instead of the RTD, but not ahead of the 2 abovementioned boats. |
Decision
Redress is granted: THA 257 is to receive fifth finishing place in race 7 |
