The social regatta, sets sail

The Social Regatta Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek sets sail.

After all the worry and trepidation about damage to crew and vessels heading into the 15th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek (CPHPR), nothing happened — everything went smoothly and PRO Simon James did a masterful job of staging two races each for five classes while the Cruising Multis and Pulse 600s got in one race each.

Fierce winds and had been blowing the last few days across Phuket and swell with gusts up to 19 knots met participants as they lined up at the first start for day one. But the winds and swell died down as the day dragged on and everyone got in a good day of sailing.

Class winners on the day were Ray Roberts Team Hollywood in IRC1; Niels Degenkolw’s Phoenix in IRC 2; Dan Fidock’s Fugazi with line honours in Racing Multis: Keith Garry’s Beaux Espirits in Cruising (NHC): John Newnham’s Twin Sharks in Fireflies; Brian Wood’s Sudu Yellow in Corsair Pulses; and Garry Slattery’s DaVinci capturing Cruising Multis.

Mig Wehrle was the MC on the night and did a terrific job summarizing the day’s activities on the water, noting that 19 monohulls and 18 multis had sailed on day one with crews from Denmark, Germany, Wales, Thailand, New Zealand, Singapore and New Zealand all represented. But Australia with 24 boats entered had the greatest representation by far. Mig’s wife Meike is sailing on Blue Noze and Mig will join her later in the regatta. He was babysitting their son Lucas today.

The sponsors for race day one included Cape Panwa Hotel, North Sails, Phuket/Krabi Boat Lagoon and Regattas Asia. Organizer Kanyarat Jones took to the stage to hand out the prizes, and on this day first-place finishers in IRC1, IRC 2 and Cruising/Charter earned a deluxe room for one night at the Cape Kudu Hotel Koh Yai. Phuket Boat Lagoon handed out free haul outs to 2nd spot in IRC1 and IRC2, while Krabi Boat Lagoon gave one-month wet berths to 2nd spot in Cruising/Charter.

North Sails gave a sail wash for up to three sails and a 10-point inspection for up to three sails to 2nd spots in Multihull Racing, Firefly 850 & Corsair Pulse 600 as well 3rd spots in IRC 1, IRC2 & Cruising/Charter.

Regattas Asia supplied Toio sailing gloves to third-place finishers in Multihull Racing, Firefly 850s, Corsair Pulse 600s.
