Winners return to defend their titles
The entry list is growing with a strong line-up of local and international boats already signed up for 2014, including a number of past winners who are back to defend (or reclaim) titles.
Last year’s Firefly 850 class winner, Twin Sharks, and past-winner Moto Inzi are both back to reignite rivalries. Regular Raceweek competitor Stuart Williamson, who placed second in IRC Racing II last year, is back for another attempt at the title on his Skandia Endeavour of Whitby, while other regulars confirmed include Ruby Tuesday and Grenville Fordham’s Nina, another past Raceweek-winner.
Leading a crew from the Metung Yacht Club in Australia to Raceweek for the first time last year was Terry Grundy, who is returning again on the chartered BeauX Esprit. They are joined by another Australian crew chartering Kinnon.
Newcomers Hedonist and Anchali have already signed up, as well as Australian Greg Reynolds who will be racing his Mumm/Farr 30 Foreign Affair after hearing good things about Raceweek.
“I’m bringing a crew of dinghy and keelboat sailors up to do Raceweek in July and none of them has sailed in Asia at all. So it will be great fun. Everything I had read about racing in Thailand and South East Asia is true. Very friendly well organised racing and great socialising, said Reynolds.
The TP52 Oi! is undefeated so far this year with wins at Royal Langkawi International Regatta and Top of the Gulf Regatta. Helmed by Peter Ahern, Oi! is back to defend its 2013 IRC Racing I title,

Clean Regattas initiative
We are taking the lead in environmental stewardship by officially becoming a Clean Regatta as approved by Sailors for the Sea, the first of its kind in South East Asia.
Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek showcases Phuket’s iconic natural surrounds, the health of which is inherently linked to the success and long-term sustainability of Phuket’s marine leisure tourism industry, and as the seas get busier, garbage in the sea and damage to marine ecosystems continues, something the organisers of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek are addressing.
“Sailing is considered to be a clean and green sport, and on the whole, it is. As residents of Phuket and organisers of an annual sailing event here, the team at Phuket Raceweek are aware of the importance of the sea to Phuket’s tourism and sailing industries, and we aim to ensure the marine environment is left in a better state for future generations, said Mr Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services (MBS).
The Clean Regattas program is a global certification system that encourages regatta organisers and yacht clubs to manage and run environmentally responsible events. Its main initiative is to reduce marine debris and preserve coastal land and waters. With regattas in more than 13 countries being certified, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is the first in South East Asia.
“We are very pleased to continue our involvement with Phuket Raceweek and this year is the third consecutive year of our sponsorship of this regatta. The synergies of an award-winning yachting event and the Cape Panwa Hotel with its unique location, luxury accommodation and first-class facilities, are clear. Feedback from sailors and guests last year was very positive and the Clean Regattas initiative for this year’s arrangement should enhance the value and standard of the regatta to another level for this year and beyond, said Mr Poomiphat Navanukroh, Travel Industry Group Director, Cape & Kantary Hotels.
