Kicking off the 2017/18 Asian Yachting Grand Prix
Reducing our carbon footprint and kicking off the 2017/18 Asian Yachting Grand PrixThe ocean environment is an important resource for everyone. Recent research shows that a number of countries in Asia, including Thailand, are amongst the world’s top ocean polluters and at Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek we will play our part in keeping the oceans clean and reducing our carbon footprint.
Back in 2014, we signed up to the “Clean Regattas” initiative by Sailors for the Sea – the first regatta in South East Asia to do so. The Clean Regattas program is a global certification system that encourages regatta organisers and yacht clubs to manage and run environmentally responsible events, the main initiative being to reduce marine debris and preserve coastal land and waters.
In addition to our established year-round reduce-reuse-recycle policy, this year we are introducing “straws on request” at the regatta.
2017/18 Asian Yachting Grand Prix
Kicking off the 2017/18 Asian Yachting Grand Prix season Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is the start of the 16th season of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix and for the new season, organisers have added the China Cup International Regatta, bringing the total number of events to thirteen.
Spanning seven countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China), the 2017/18 season starts in Thailand at Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek and finishes almost 12 months later, again in Thailand, at the 2018 Samui Regatta in June. For the self-proclaimed hardest sports trophy to win in Asia, Skippers and Yachts are scored at all those events in which they take part, with the best six scores counting to the series point score. At the end of the season, the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Skipper of the Year and Asian Yachting Grand Prix Yacht of the Year is presented by no other than the series founder himself, Capt Marty.
